The Shelby Touched Twice Clinic didn’t disappoint.
Visitors came for physical and emotional needs like medical screenings, nonperishable food, clothing, books, a Bible, hair care, family portraits, a hot meal at the church and another to take home, and more. But spiritual support is the “twice” in Touched Twice.
The annual event, Saturday, March 23 was held at Shelbyville First Baptist Church on Midland Trail.
Process
Volunteers called shepherds escorted families from one area to the next within the church.
After registration, visitors walked into the sanctuary to hear the Gospel, then went to stations they needed.
Church vans picked up visitors who requested transportation as long as they were in Shelby County.
Touched Twice
The organization is nationwide, and the Shelby Touched Twice Clinic is the oldest continual Touched Twice Clinic in the country, 15 years strong, ceasing only one year at the height of the COVID pandemic.
Services
Professionals from many walks of life gave services for free, including dental screenings, blood pressure checks, blood sugar results, sports and school physicals, chiropractor, pharmaceutical and family portraits. “Doctors were willing to spend one day and give back to people who really needed it. Dental treatment can get very expensive as well as other health issues,” said Dana Jenkins, volunteer from Elmburg Baptist Church.
Visitors also received nonperishable food, clothing, Bibles, a hot meal at the church and a hot meal to take home.
Shepherds created prayer circles with visitors and were available to help with spiritual growth and support.
Numbers
By 11 a.m. more than 150 families had signed up for the event.
More than 360 volunteers had signed in by 10:30 a.m. from 23 cities representing 58 churches, 14 denominations across three states and 40 zip codes. “You can tell there’s a sweet spirit about all the volunteers,” Jenkins said.
Some volunteers had been at the church as early as 4:35 a.m. to get things ready.
